Story behind the Backpacks
Derived from a female Nubian name, according to an Ibibio Nigerian Nubian folktale, AKIM was a gorgeous, curvy, young woman made of oil who melted in the sun while doing farm labour. This backpack represents the woman who works hard and let nothing come in her way. In celebration of the Nubian female, OKHTEIN designed The AKIM backpack to tell the story of the hardworking woman. She is fierce, she helps support her family, and most importantly, she’s independent. The rods' design is inspired originally by Nubian/African rope necklaces and nose rings.
